Colorado Buffaloes Zeroing in on Kick/Punt Returners

Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Jay MacIntyre (14) fends off Washington State Cougars defensive back Parker Henry (29) in the first quarter at Folsom Field in Boulder on Nov. 19, 2016.

Colorado is getting close to figuring out who will return punts and kicks this season.

On Monday, CU head coach Mike MacIntyre said the Buffs haven’t made final decisions, but they’ve narrowed the list of candidates.

On punt returns, the Buffs had Jay MacIntyre — Mike’s son — handling those duties last year until he fumbled two returns against Arizona State. Isaiah Oliver handled punts the rest of the way, including a 68-yard return for touchdown to seal a victory against UCLA.

Coach MacIntyre told last month that Oliver would return punts, but on Monday said Jay MacIntyre and redshirt freshman Ronnie Blackmon will also get chances.

“We’ll have all three of those guys at different times,” he said.

Oliver had a huge game against UCLA, with five returns for 124 yards, but had just 40 yards on 10 returns in other games.

Jay MacIntyre had the rough game against Arizona State, but averaged 10.5 yards on 13 returns before that, with six returns of at least 10 yards.
